If you’ve been in the breed any longer than a minute, you’ll know I’m referring to the 20-year-old frozen semen of a true breed legend—Hunter.

 

If you are just now taking an interest in what separates ethical breeders from those who’s puppies wind up overfilling shelters this dog had/has (thanks to frozen semen) a lasting effect on the segment of the breed that strives for sound stabile healthy dogs.

 

Physically Hunter was an honest dog…moderate balanced square with angles that would allow him to trot all day without tiring or breaking down.

 

His temperament was …all Red Boy lol. He was hard on the outside and soft and squishy on the inside. No one had to tell him what his job was but he also had those soft brown moon eyes that hypnotize the ones he loved and melted them like butter. If you’ve ever been loved by a goofy red boy you know what I mean.

 

Hunter lived over 12 yrs and passed his longevity on to many of his offspring. It’s not that dcm never popped up but the number of his kids who lived long enuff to have a full “sugar face” far out numbered the unlucky ones. For those of you who actually look at pedigrees pay attention to “LC”numbers. Our parent club does their best to track and tag those dogs who survive into their double digits. When a dog reaches 10 yrs of age the breeder/owner can attach a “Longevity Certificate” number at the end of their registered name and they can continue to update the number for as long as the dog is alive. So an LC-12 indicates this dog lived into his 12th yr.

 

There is a nice number of LC#’s behind Hunter but what you can’t see by looking at his pedigree is the generations of Hunter kids and grand kids who have LC#’s…over 32 direct progeny with LC#’s! Talk about paying it forward! Hunter left a lasting imprint on many of the breed’s most important producers. His influence continues to appear throughout pedigrees today. ● 2007 DPCA national specialty best of breed winner

● Westminster Award of Merit (2004): Recognized early in his show career

● AKC Champion: Finished his championship at just 7 months of age

● BIS / BISS Winner: Multiple Best in Show and Best in Specialty Show wins during his career

● Silver Legacy Award Recipient: Recognized by the Parent club for his genetic contribution to the breed

In 2008 he had 4 kids in the Top 20 simultaneously. He produced a total of 7 Top 20 contenders. Three of them won. He sired many dogs who accomplished advanced obedience agility and rally titles.

 

This breeding represents a reconnection with the qualities our breed values most: Square Moderate Powerful Balanced Elegant and Watchful. These are the qualities with which Hunter stamped his get and I hope to see in this litter. The depth of history, performance, and production behind this pairing makes it truly special. Some legends deserve to live on. Hunter is one of them.
